Sinking Sand, Snakes, and So-Long

Early to bed (no) - Early to rise (yes)...  Early to rise trying to get things done before I left for the high desert.  High meaning hills - lots of them.  This day me and my adventures in quality control buddy set out with great expectations, and silents prayers.  One block was unbelievably hilly.  Sinking sand hilly.  We got stuck at a point in the dry sand.  Probably should have headed that warning and turned around.  But we are census workers (meaning we're used to being masochists).

The road got long and went way up and had a crazy turn and then there was the drop that kept me from looking out of my passenger window and praying that my co-worker would stay on the ledge.  We did make it up and then down the other side of this diddy, but several scratches on the car and wrenched nerves later we saw the snake slither across our path.

Mission accomplished as best we could and then back to the compound for what might have been our last day again.    What more was left?  We had seen everything I think.  So we decided after we signed out to drive to Vegas, as tired as we were it seemed like a good idea.  At least it helped to wind us down, and "what happens in Vegas is fun!"

Turn Around Now or Never Turn Around Again

The words on a sign at the gate of an ominous looking road leading to God only knows.  Thinking it was a house but the sign read - and it's worth repeating - turn around now or never turn around again.  My partner and I both agree that this indeed was a threat, and we definitely heeded the warning.  Still up in the area where the community requested a particular looking census worker.  And yes there were dogs today.  Three - one which was a pit bull.  This crazy creature chase the car for about 3 miles.  All we could do was drive and laugh.  Thankfully I wasn't driving.  Adventures in quality control sucks.  I know I said the same about adventures in canvassing - and it did.

All I know is - I'm tired.

Baseball does indeed matter, but I haven't even had time to rewind the Dodgers game.

Just When I Thought it Was Safe to go Back in the Water...

Maybe an exaggeration but wouldn't you know it - a soon as I was about to see how to collect unemployment I get a call from the census bureau.  Yes, adventures in canvassing did end on Monday, but on Wednesday the few, the proud, the feds were called back to do adventures in quality control.  Don't ask.  Twelve hours and 111 miles later I am back home from this morning and the only thing I want to do is watch the Dodgers play the Padres and write this entry.

Other than my tired burning eyes, things are not too shabby.  No dogs today.  There was something that seemed rather racist or maybe just ignorant - a community in one of those remote areas (guessing they had a town hall meeting) actually requested to the sheriff that if the census bureau has to come out that they send only white men.  Interesting.  I won't waste my energy considering the nonsense of that.  I did get a great idea to use in my new screenplay.  On the road again give a mind lots of time to think.
