Win a House

You'll have to make it a home.  With all the foreclosures and banks still not lending, all might seem dismal for someone looking to keep or purchase their dream home.  But wait!  HGTV has a great home to giveaway, and you can submit an entry every day through February 19th!  Go check it out at HGTV.com, but if you win, you gotta invite me to the housewarming -- if I win, I'll extend the courtesy so no worries.

The day is too nice to be inside, so --

Baseball Happens!

With spring training camps starting next month - now is a great time to add this weekly regular -- BASEBALL HAPPENS!  For my screenplay First Base, I tried to watch every baseball movie ever made, but especially the top ten as chosen by ESPN.  Yes, Kevin Costner, does appear in a lot of them, so does James Earl Jones (supposing he wasn't only "Luke's" father).  Needless to say all those hours taught me a lot.

Robert Deniro said in the fan (I paraphrase) -- "baseball's better than life, baseball's fair".  The metaphoric teachings from the diamond go a long way.  I have watch many a game, from little league to the bigs and lived a bit too, so here's what I got to start with --

When you get thrown a curve ball, keep your head on it, and take your best swing to hit it out of the park!  or When things get tough, hang in there and do all you can do to come out on top!

File Early

But if you live in Cali and are due a state tax refund - forget about it.  That's not from me.  That's from the comptroller.  The budget deficit is in such a problem, that any refund you are owed will take a while.  Wonder if you owe money how that will work?  Hmmm.

I love this great state.  It's my residence of choice.  There's the biz, the Dodgers, the hills, the valleys, the beaches, the traffic, the weather, the fires, the mudslides, the earthquakes, the cop chases, the dismal economy, and  my life.  It really chaps my hide when I hear transplants who talk about being called here to the land of the fruits and the nuts.  Northern Californians even differentiate themselves from southern Californians.  I suppose to each his/her own.  I love California, but I especially love LA!

Genuine Mix

Maybe I should take this as a compliment - some sort of weird term of endearment - BUT I DON'T  But I do love Gregory for being who he is and I always have something to write on Gregorysm Day - that's today by the way.

Genuine Mix - Uniquely defined above finish mix, and we all know that finish mix is anything that Gregory deems as uneatable but maybe will fill an empty stomach.  If finish mix will finish you off then genuine mix will finish you off completely just by looking at it.

The photo is as Gregory puts it "genuine mix".  After uncovering his dinner he rushed to take a picture of it and send it to me and his cronies.  I think this was an embarrassing moment but having Gregory around guarantees there will be other embarrassing moments.

What more can I say?  Whatever.

2 Years $45M

The economy is working for somebody.  The Dodgers made this 2 year $45 million dollar offer for free agent Manny Ramirez.  I like Manny.  When he joined the boys in blue mid-season last year he brought lots of spirit with him.. The Dodgers exploded and went to the post season.  I even like the dreads.  Will he hold out for an offer of 4-5 years from some other club?  IDK, but I hope not!

SIGN WITH THE DODGERS MANNY -- YOU LOOK GOOD HERE!

As the wise Jeff Franklin (producer) once told me -" Don't let you agent lose a job for you".

Slumdog Again?!

Yep -- last night the Screen Actors Guild Award for best picture went to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE!  Definitely the little fish in the big pond that swims faster, and the little engine that could and did.

What was real?  When the cast received the award for best ensemble cast in a feature, the speakers from the group thanked the children who set the whole tone of the entire film.  Casting was above par and I do agree that the children involved made this story the more beautiful to watch.  Look them up on IMDB.

Read my December 23, 2008 entry review as posted --

"...What can a slumdog possibly know?"

More than an A+.  My whole-hearted belief -- "Slumdog Millionaire" is the epitome of how to write a great screenplay as taught by the well known Writer's Boot Camp.  All the elements are put on the page and brought together with brilliant creativity that this film is sure to win many awards.

With all the news coming out of India about the Hindu extremist gangs and lack of police control in this over populated area of the world, Slumdog Millionaire invites us into the ugly streets of this dismal place with the only beauty found in the vibrant characters who survive daily there.  Simon Beaufoy adapts a magnificent tale from the novel by Vikas Swarup - more than likely exquisitely detailed, as I have yet to read it - and places us directly into the dung heaps of a former India, and over a span of approximately 10-12 years as we follow the life of "slumdog" Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) as he goes from child to young adult - from rags to riches.  With the real riches being to finally re-unite with the love he feels he is destined to be with.

Bollywood takes the helm with this one.  A tent pole I must say.  More theaters need to pull it into there house as it will, without a doubt, bring in the ticket sales.  A MUST SEE!

Since the posting of this review Slumdog Millionaire has earned over $55.9 at the box office, has brought in a lot of hardware, and has been placed in more movie houses.  Thinking that this review is on the money!!  Guess what?  I wrote it!  Cool.

PARTY GAME: Oscar Picks

A few days ago I posted the link to the Oscar nominees.  In case you plan to follow up that very loud and super casual Superbowl party (next Sunday!) with a very elegant dressy Oscar party  you will need your guests to fill out the following Oscar pick sheet.  Just click and print out the "official ballot" and challenge your guests to pick their favs before the show begins!  You could even give a plastic Oscar trophy and maybe movie passes to the winner who gets the most picks right.  In the event of a tie the prizes go to the one who picked the winner to something obscure like -- "sound editing" or "documentary short".  Silly fun, huh?

Get that RED CARPET ready for February 22, 2009!

"Nobody knows the mall better than I do"

...So says PAUL BLART: MALL COP.  Rest assure y'all, when you are out spending all the money you don't have at your favorite mall, there is a mall cop who is pretty much qualified to protect the patrons who scale the miles of stores situated under one roof.  OK, maybe not but the movie's funny!

Why this film didn't come out during the holidays is anyone's guess who wasn't involved in the decision of releasing this film the 3rd weekend of January.  The mall jacking takes place on the worst shopping day of the year - the dreaded black Friday.  Then there is the posse of crooks which include perps that go by the names of Santa's reindeer -- all of whom were quite ninja like and x-gamish.  Strange but yet entertaining.

Kevin James (Paul Blart) great in this!  Very funny.  Very big boned -- but still, very funny.  In fact the only comment I heard about Mall Cop was that if any other actor had been cast, the movie would not have been as funny.  Probably true.  I think it's worth a laugh and it is #1 at the box office right now.

"I Got You"

Thinking it's a Brooklyn thang -- these 3 little words "I got you" from NOTORIOUS, used by several characters, several times throughout this informative biopic.  Yeah, some would this is a tale told by one narrow side of the spectrum, but than again, aren't they all told that way?

Not being big winded here, because this picture carries it's own weight (no pun intended) -- just let me say, albeit exhausting, story wise, (lots of draaaama) the cinematography is wonderful.  The cast stunning -- many of whom are more attractive then the bodies they were playing.  The direction and timing very nice.  Maybe only a bit more story connection needed about how "Biggie's" life changed for the better right before he was killed.

I was skeptical about going to see this film especially here in the Stepford-like Santa Clarita Valley (although they didn't show it in the bigger, nicer theater in the better part of SCV).  The movie house wasn't crowded but all those who were there varied in gender, race, and age, and everyone seemed to like what they were viewing.  My prediction is the actress who portrayed "Lil Kim" Naturi Naughton, will be around awhile.

Good stuff.

"I wasn't playing Obama, I was Obama"

Be it as it may, I got my inspiration for this week's Gregorysm's day from Gregory last week, but thought it appropriate to save it until after the historic inauguration held yesterday in my birthplace - Washington DC.

I told Gregory that there are some photos of Mr. Obama from his freshman year in college, posted on the internet and upon seeing these photos - that Mr. Obama reminded me of Gregory.  To which in his Gregorysm way, Gregory replied -- "that's what everyone's been saying"...  So, I continued... I need to make sure your agent sees the resemblance, and submits you for any auditions for Barack Obams's life story.  To which Gregory replied amicably -- "I know I could do it, because when I did that skit in class last semester, I wasn't just playing Obama, I was Obama."  THAT"S OUR GREGORY Y'ALL!

Please forgive the casual use of President Obama's name in the entry -- by no means is any disrespect meant, only the utmost admiration for the man who rallied a nation to vote their conscious and elect the best candidate for the position at hand.  May God forever bless him and his family, along with Vice President Biden and his family.

This Is The Day That The LORD Has Made

...let us rejoice and be glad in it.  What a wonderful, and memorable time in this nation's history.  A great and honorable time.  A time that many of my ancestors only dreamed of maybe someday coming, but not many thought they would see.

In the Bible's Old Testament there are stories of kings - good and bad - nevertheless, historical truths penned for all to be taught and remember.  Like today.  This day is now forever immortalized on the pages of history - for the good.

My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Senator Kennedy, who collapsed during today's festivities.  My continued prayers and uplifting go out to President Obama and his family, and Vice-President Biden and his family.  To God be the glory.

BYE BYE BYE!!

Tonight Mrs. Michelle Obama and Mrs. Jill Biden hosted the Kids' Inaugural: We Are the Future bash on the Disney channel.  Way to go Disney/ABC!  The theme honored the men and women in the military and their families as well as promoted the new era of celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Day - by serving/volunteering in your community.

On the day before the inauguration of the 44th president of these here United States - Mr. Barack Obama - may I please say, thank you.  Thank you.  I can see a change already just in the attitude of people - the hope in their eyes that maybe, yes perhaps, we have elected the right men (President Obama & Vice President Biden) for the job.  To top it off, we get their lovely families to watch grow for the next 4 and hopefully 8 years!  YAY!

And in the words of an old boy band N-SYNC - BYE BYE BYE - Mr. Bush.  It's been...???

YES WE CAN

Today after Church I went to the corner 7-Eleven, to pick up a bottled black ice tea from the refrigerator.   Paying at the counter I was told by the gentleman behind the counter that I was getting the same black tea that a great and wonderful man drinks every day.  I was like -- "okay?".  But then he insisted  on telling me how smart this man is and his name (as the guy pronounced) is "(b)merrackobamamomomona".  "What?"  I asked, but then getting a glimpse of the smile of honor on this clerk's face, I knew.  "Oh, Barack Obama" as I laughed and smiled back just as he pointed to the picture of Mr. Obama that was hanging on the wall behind him.  He then continued to tell me that this great and wonderful man who drinks the same black tea daily is going to be the next president.

WOW!  We have a president who excites, or should I say ignites.  Never did I see a picture of Bush hanging up in a 7-Eleven.  Cool.  Way cool.

As we count down the hours - not many left - let's revisit when we were told by then a democratic candidate and now President Elect Barack Obama that "Yes We Can"...

Smile, Tuesday is almost here.

I Have An Uncle Joe Too

My Uncle Joe called me the other night.  Not strange that he called, but strange because of the time he called.  It was 7:30pm pacific time.  He lives in a town outside of Atlanta, so it was 10:30pm his time.  You see - my Uncle Joe eats dinner rather early and goes to bed way before 8:00pm usually.  Of course when I saw his name pop up on the caller ID I hurried to answer.  We talked for about an hour, about nothing, and about everything.

A while back Uncle Joe gave me a collection of his poems.  Thank goodness you can publish your own book online now, because that is exactly what I intend to do for him.  Enjoy --

Once I Knew
by
Joseph Fisher

Once I knew how to play like a child
Imagination drifting and wandering wild
Allowing myself the abandon of childhood
Reliving a life in fantasy
Which was once reality.

Once I knew how to love like a child
Caring for everything in a very special way
Rejoicing at the beauty of many things
Farfetched and illusionary now
Yet real in the past.

Once I knew how to cry like a child
Sure wish that was possible today
Life would have had less emotional strain
Growing up would not have been a fantasy
It would have remained reality.

Wish I knew how to play like a child now
To recapture the past of my youthful years
To love unselfishly as I had once known
To live for the only reason for which I was born
True harmony with God and man.

This is only one in many beautiful poems Uncle Joe penned.  Let me know how you like it.  Everyone should have an Uncle Joe.

"Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't have messed with? That's me."

A quote from the movie GRAN TORINO, delivered steel eyed by Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) -- Since the first release of the trailer, I had no idea what the title meant.  I am not a Ford fan or car buff.  I like NASCAR though, and when they added Toyotas I thought they made a good move.  My driver drives a Chevy # 88 - JUNIOR!

Back to the movie.  The 1:10 matinee was half full of people who looked to be Mr. Eastwood's age, and then there was me with my bottle of water and small popcorn.  No one really was excited about seeing the movie with me, but I wanted to see it, because it was Clint Eastwood.  What exactly that means to me - IDK.

Here's my take.  If you are a huge or even small Eastwood fan, than go see it.  To quote my Uncle Joe -- "I haven't seen a Clint Eastwood movie that wasn't great!"  Dude!  But, if you get easily offended by racial slurs and trash talk, after you get through the first negative hour of continuous stereotyping and racial obscenities, you just might think the movie is great.

There are some nice strings throughout, but also a lot of empty or left out information in this piece of storytelling.  Didn't really see the ending veer way away from traditional vigilante Eastwood, but I did hear a comment walking out of the theater that the ending was lame.  I'm guessing that person wasn't a true follower of this Hollywood icon.

Emotionally gripping or disturbing movie - whatever way you look at it.  Cool car though -- but the movie wasn't about the car.  Mr. Eastwood's performance -- yes, worthy of an Oscar nom.

Gotta Love Him!

What day is it?

Wednesday!

No -- it's Gregorysms Day!!

YAY?

Are you asking yourself why I am carrying on a dialogue with myself?  It's saner, and funny.  I amuse myself often.  Good thing for someone who writes comedies, with some drama thrown in there.  I enjoy comedy, laughing at myself.  A writing teacher of mine once assigned the class a project to write random conversations that we heard throughout the day -- here's a conversation:

Mom:       Hi Greg.
Gregory:  Hey boss.
Mom:       I'm making mac and cheese tonight.
Gregory:  Mmm - finish mix.
Mom:       Have you spoken to Grandma today?
Gregory:  No.
Mom:       She was in the hospital.
Gregory:  If I had known Grams was in the hospital I would have called her.
Mom:       I just found out myself.  She drove herself to the hospital.
Gregory:  What a ransom!

Definition of "ransom" -- I believe it's something really mucked up.  No worries people, I'm working on collecting the actual Gregory definitions to his words.  I know - you can't wait.

Ciao Y'all.

FYI: All is well with Grams.

So LOWE

Dodgers' fans, Derek Lowe has left the stadium!  As a big free agent, he has accepted a 4 year deal with the Atlanta Braves.  He might be missed -- although I wish Broxton was leaving,  I honestly do not care.  The Dodgers will go on.  Maybe hold on to that Lowe Dodger jersey though -- it could very well be worth something one day.

SLUMMIN' AT THE GG's

To no one's surprise, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE was the bell of the Golden Globe Awards' ceremony yesterday.  The young humble co-stars (Dev Patel and Freda Pinto) appeared very nervous and excited amidst the whole realm of the event.  Not too shabby for their first film.  The two should have very bright futures in Bollywood and the like.  Personally, I believe it was the courageous vision of director Danny Boyle with co-director Loveleen Tandan, that made this tale such a beautiful cinema success!

Read my Dec 23, 2008 "...what can a slumdog possibly know?" blog review of the movie.  Go see the movie, as it is very worthy of the Oscar too.

PORNO FOR DOLLARS!

Larry Flint  publisher of "Hustler" and Joe Francis CEO of "Girls Gone Wild" announced they are going to Washington to ask for a 5 billion dollar porn bailout!  (Read the story yourself on CNN.com)

And you know the shocking part?

I think they're right.  But before you start sending me email and letters, hear me out.  I don't believe they deserve or even will get any kind of money for their travels and maybe making a mockery of the system, but I do believe they have a point in their idiotic grandstanding.

Washington gave some banks and certain automotive companies quite a bit of taxpayer money, and you know what?  Those car companies are just businesses that mismanaged their business, and those "banks" don't seem to be trying to help anybody but themselves, considering there are still many families being displaced from their homes due to foreclosures!

I say go to Washington.  Everyone, go to Washington!  Travel first class.  Put on your bestest going to meeting clothes.  Practice that sad look your dog gets when you're leaving the house -- and just ask for billions.  Who knows, you might get millions.  COOL!

"It ain't June"..."and it ain't the Plaza"...

...lifelong best friends Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) deliver this line in BRIDE WARS.  No, I did not say these lines because as lifelong best friends they spoke as one -- like most bff's do.

Ms. Hathaway is definitely what's hot in Hollywood these days.  Still loved her in "Rachel Getting Married".  Ms. Hudson is a natural crack up in her own skin.  Cast together in this buddy comedy, the two play amazingly well off each other's energy in this sometimes funny story about two brides who have always dreamed of their wedding day in June at the Plaza.

My thinking is that this story premiered right on time, considering wedding season is knocking at the door with Valentine's Day right around the corner, and before you know it, there will be June weddings all over the place -- not all at the plaza, but all over the place.

Yeah, you lost me for a sec there -- weddings do that to me!

This feature is definitely a fun girls' night out film.  Don't be surprised if you take your boyfriend and he starts to squirm in his seat, and excuses himself alot to go to the restroom, but instead takes a detour to peek at "Gran Torino" in the next house.  You've been warned.

"I'd never given much thought to how I would die. But dying in the place of someone I loved seemed like a good way to go. "

"...But dying in the place of someone I loved seemed like a good way to go."  A line worth repeating from the well hailed TWILIGHT, which I probably shouldn't be commenting on since I had to leave the theatre before the end of the third act.  The stars were at the prom dancing alone when my favorite movie buddy felt sick and had to leave the theatre (truth is often stranger than fiction).  So if you know how this movie ends, can you tell me if it's worth going back to see the end.

The difference of the vampires pulls you in.  They don't stay out of the sunlight in fear of dying, like in those old B movies, they stay out of the sunlight because it magnifies their awesomeness!  Was that comment way too Gregorysm to you?  Any who -- I am quite impressed that the novel was written by a woman, the screenplay was written by a woman, and the film was directed by a woman.  I think a lot about a woman directing my film -- First Base.  And after seeing Twilight, I think about what's his name, Robert Pattinson, who play Edward Cullen as the opponent in First Base.  If anyone knows him, can you get my script to him?

As movies go, this was a good one -- chemistry was good, although corny at times, but the arena is high school.  I am kind of looking forward to the second one.

In case you're curious, my movie buddy feels better now.

Ethos

"Yes, that's right folks it's Gregorysm's day!" she declared in her best game show host voice.  Her face was plastered with a phony smile and her eyes shown deep pain.  Behind the eyes and the smile there lived a soul who hated having to declare week in and week out about the day that seemed to take the place of hump day.

Don't worry about me, I'm exercising my novel writing skills.  Cool!

OK - ETHOS... thinking it's not the water in Starbucks when it comes to the dictionary according to Gregory.  In fact I have no idea what it means.  I only know when he uses it and can continue to speculate that it fits the emotion for the moment.

sample sentence:  Thomas lost all of his ethos when he begged for forgiveness after wrecking the car and getting arrested for driving without a license.

So, ETHOS is something that can be lost.  Do you have to find yours to lose it?

For Sale, Leasing Now, Now Renting...

and the signs go on and on and on and on...  These signs are everywhere.  An apartment complex that used to be 10 deep on the wait list now has a 2 bdrm, 2 bth, loft vacancy sign.  Given that this place is located right next door to a very high traffic DMV in Newhall the rent is under $1000!  It was tempting.

My question is - where is everyone going?  Are there large and small families moving back home to Mom and Dad's?  And does an economic crisis affect the homeless or make more homeless?

Won't you be glad tomorrow is Gregorysm's Day?

Why All the Gloom?

The start of a new year can be hampered with unwanted rollover minutes from the past year - the anguish of knowing this year you have to go through the fire - get through the rainy season and try to salvage crops that will not be sufficient enough to keep up with last year's harvest that was bad.

Tomorrow my Mother will have attended her second funeral this year - yes it's only the start of January.  I guess knowing that things could be a lot worse is a comfort.  Or not.

But it's not all gloom.  You can go on KOST 103.5.com and enter a contest to win a two year lease on a mini cooper just by telling them what your new year's resolution is or was.  See, I found a silver lining.

Sex, Love, or Money?

What's in it for you?  In a relationship?  Are you in it for the heart stopping sex - the heartfelt love, or money that has nothing to do with the heart at all?  Should a relationship be a partnership, like a business -- you pay this much, I'll pay that much, or should that all be thrown to the wind for the devil may care lust of the flesh, or the loving June wedding?

Together these three work well, and it seems separately they don't work at all.

I know a man - a good friend - who lives with a woman and uses that as a reason not to have to commit to these young unsuspecting women who throw themselves at him because they believe he can take them to stardom.  "If I wasn't living with somebody" or he'd say "if my situation was different".  STOP!

Tell me something true -- when does life become too important to waste time on knuckle heads?  In the words of my wise Mother "do you".  Take care of you.  Guard your heart.  Without preaching, God is forever faithful and true.

BETSY COME BACK!!!

Yelled the owner of this very spotted Dalmatian.  Betsy didn't come back though, she didn't even yield or heel or slow down.  She ran.  Her owner ran.  She ran him around in circles and down a street until she ran out of sight into the abyss of human life form, and the spotted Betsy was no more.
Okay, the no more part is a bit dramatic, and the poor dog should have been on the leash that her owner held in his hand, but this is a human or dog interest story.  I only hope he finds her.  She's probably waiting for him at home.

"Without hope, life's not worth living."

...The end words to a very moving memoir by Harvey MILK spoken into a tape recorder in 1978 before he was murdered that same year.

Eight years earlier on his 40th birthday, Milk, had prophesied to his partner Scott Smith that he wouldn't make it to 50.  Out of the mouth the heart speaks.  I'm sure if he had been able to foresee the good works he was to do for the gay community he would have opted for more time.  I had no knowledge of this man's life and now I know how his life changed many lives.  No matter your views on homosexuality or the gay movement, this story is told to encourage as Harvey Milk put it "us".  We're the "us" vice being the "thems" or the "theys".

Sean Penn (and I have seen seen this tall, handsome man in person), very much transformed himself into the man Milk.  Every now and then there was a hint of Sam (I AM SAM - New Line Cinema) in the gestures he made, and I had to remember who I was watching, but a worthy performance.  Worthy of many nods from many award shows that we will be watching in the upcoming months.  Go see this flick on performance alone.

HOPE

This time last year with the toast of sparkling cider, as is tradition in this house, I knew 2008 was going to be a year of changes.  Wasn't quite sure what changes but I knew there would be changes.  And there were -- with President Elect O'Bama being #1.

My life and the way I see it also changed.  I did finish that screenplay "POP!"  Why it was so tedious to complete, is probably the same reason why I didn't put too much time into the rewrites.  I still believe it's a viable project, and a great tool to have in my briefcase.  Hopefully completing "Virtual Soldiers" will be better this year.

I also brainstormed a more than marketable business in L"AMORE INTIMO.  Originally named Breathe for obvious reasons, L'Amore has gone from a mere idea on paper to a hat box full of promising samples, and a web address for this sensual apparel line.

Lots of personal effects did effect my existence, but I'm still standing and ready to forge ahead to grander things that await me.  Thank you to my family and friends who have supported me in so many loving ways.  I love you all.

2009 is a year of hope.
